My doctor said not to worry but i am a first time mom so i am going to worry.

When I had my first baby in '96, My sister's friend's baby died of cot death.
My sister was so horrified that she bought us a breathing monitor for a present for our baby. It was an odd piece of equipment and sent a 'beam' over the baby from above the cot and when no movement was detected after, say, 30 seconds, it went off.
It used to go off all the time and frighten the s..t out of us!
When I had my second baby, I needed the reassurance again, so used the monitor for both my second and third babies.
Last year I had my fourth baby and as there was a gap of 6 yrs between the last and this one, I purchased a new one as the old one was 'dated' and I wasn't sure it was still working!
I paid £69.99 for it, it's by TOMY and there's a pad that goes under the mattress and an alarm goes off if no motion is detected after 20 seconds.
It's worth it's weight in gold, I swear. Sometimes my baby girl holds her breath and the alarm has gone off, I've had to grab her, then she calmly takes a breath in....

I would dread to think about if I hadn't bought this alarm.

I know you'll worry about EVERYTHING being a first time mum, I worry and I've got FOUR kids!!!!

This thing detects a good range of movement as my baby is all over the place in the cot..(I used it in the moses basket too)

Best wishes!

They have monitors (Angel Care) that you can use but you may want to think twice. If it is SIDS you are worried about a monitor will alert you that the baby has stopped breathing but you cannot revive a SIDS baby. If a baby stops breathing because of SIDS then that baby is already gone. My daughter died of SIDS and my husband was sitting right beside her and noticed it immediately because when she stopped breathing her pacifier fell out. He noticed she was not breathing when he went to put it back in her mouth. I started CPR immediately and the EMS was there very quick because we only lived like 2 blocks away. My doctor told me at the hospital that since it was SIDS she was already gone as soon as she stopped breathing. If it is apnea you can bring them out of it my nudging them a little or rousing them. I guess it depends how much it would weigh on your mind if your baby stopped breathing because of SIDS and the alarm went off and the only thing you could do is watch your baby die. I was given an Apnea monitor with my second child since my first one died of SIDS and I gave it back when I decided I could not go through that again. I could not watch another baby die knowing that no matter what I do it will not make a difference. Needless to say I now have two healthy happy children.

*lol* Well you know you really shouldn't worry and it may just be a phase. Mine slept on his belly for about 3 weeks, now he is back to being all over the place.

There are quite a few monitors:
www.Babysens.com
www.darixon-shop.com

I think the first one was called angel-care or something.

But these are quite expensive. And, not to scare you, but one mom I know is in a SIDS group because her daughter passed and one of the other moms had a baby die of SIDS in her arms, during the day, and CPR did nothing. True SIDS is not treatable.

As a Parent myself I understand your concern but your Doctor is right. If your child had no conditions in the past with trouble breathing during sleep it wont begin to have one now. Doctors told us that its a humans natural reaction to search for air, therfore if your child begins to smuther itself due to sleeping on its belly it will just turn its head to get air. SIDS is a totally different condition and has nothing to do with suffication during sleep (see link below). As a first time parent I can sympothise with what you are feeling. As parents it is our job to worry about our children and to do everything in our power to keep them safe. I just hope others experiences and words can help you find comfort that you are not alone in this. Do whatever you need to do to sleep at night. God Bless and congrats on the first child.

I've never heard of it...but it's been a while since my little one was a baby. Call a store like babies r us and see if they have something like that. The sales reps will be more than happy to help you. Also, it's understandable to worry.....Having a baby means being responsible for another human life. I worry about mine all the time and she just turned 6. Good luck to you.
