First thing I respond to is the music and whether or not it "jams my chi" or in other words makes my body react uncomfortably (best exaple I can give you is when I hear anything techno I feel very angry, so that jams my chi). Second is the melodic flow of the lyrics...not so much what's being said...good example of this is "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones...GREAT tune, but the lyrics suck! hehe! (that doesn't mean I don't like the song). Third component is what message is the lyrics trying to convey.

It needs to have a good message I won't listen to anything that I don't get a message from and contrary to what other people may think some rap actually has a good message, I do not care what type of music I'm listening to as long as the words flow, the message is clear, and a good beat.

Good songs have good lyrics that are easy to relate to and have catchy tunes that you can't stop singing all day.
Great songs, however, are the ones that send shivers down your spine every single time you listen to them; that you can't help but get up and dance to; whose lyrics you not only relate to but are inspired by; and that stand the test of time.

Almost anything with a minimum of synth and a maximum of "artist involvement", if you will. real instruments, real voices, no matter the genre.
