Selections are determined by a combination of album sales, radio airplay, touring history, and degree of continuous popularity. Solo artists are included in a separate list.

1. The Beatles
Essential Album: Revolver
With record sales estimated at more than a billion worldwide, no other band had a greater influence on the course of rock music.

2. Pink Floyd
Essential Album: Wish You Were Here
At the vanguard of the progressive rock movement, they have sold more than 200-million albums since 1967. One of the first bands to use light shows and fireworks in their live performances.

3. The Who
Essential Album: Who's Next
One of the first, most successful, and longest lasting "power trios," this group was innovative both musically and technically.

4. Rolling Stones
Essential Album: Sticky Fingers
The original "bad boys" of rock, they are among the most durable bands, recording and touring with few breaks since they began in 1961.

5. Led Zeppelin
Essential Album: Led Zeppelin IV
Their Stairway To Heaven is believed to have received more radio airplay than any other song in history, even though it was never released as a single.

I don't really know for sure. There are so many lists and count downs from the RollingStone magazine and VH1. Here's my personal favorites of bands that have had an undeniable impact on music:
1. Led Zeppelin (recently heard a little of their stuff. Now I'm obsessed. Their incredible! Not to mention one of the first, if not the first, rock bands ever.)
2. Black Sabbath (I happen to think that the band was amazing with Ozzy. They aren't worth listening to without him. They set the pallet for what metal is today! Not to mention other genres of music. So original and epic for the time. How could they not be on the list?!!)
3. David Bowie!!!!!! (My personal favorite musician ever!!!! I know he isn't really a band, but whatever. He would be my number one but he is an aquired taste. I recommend listenint to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Amazing album and that is the full title. You'll either hate it or you'll be obsessed with it and you'll have to have more Bowie!)
4. ACDC (Everyone loves Back in Black. How can you not?! So many different artist have been influenced by it. It's one of the most important albums in music history.)
5. Nirvana (Simply because they were very very original. Incredible. I wish they could have done more. And I love almost everything they did. Did you know there's a movie coming out on Kurt Cobain's life!)

Beatles, The Beach Boy's, The Supreme's, Hendrix, Allman Brothers How i came to this conclusion, was to look at the contribution and influence they had in the coming decades. The many spin off bands that were huge in their own right. Beatles influenced almost all modern music; even to this day. In fact the 1st spin off band of the Beatles, was the Byrd's. The Beach Boy's Pet Sound album was so revolutionary, that even the Beatles claimed it to be the best album ever when they heard it. The Supreme's were the biggest soul and R&b band of its day, The Jackson five were one of the biggest spin off bands, along with countless others. Hendrix!! He changed music PERIOD!! Allman Brothers spun off all of Southern Rock and many jam bands, and was one of the first to mix, jazz, blues, rock along with some odd time figures.

I think it's practically impossible to cut it down to five but I suppose it would have to be:

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Who
Queen
The Beatles

I think this is doing great injustice to many other fantastic bands, however.
