I was in Manchester YHA in the New Year. And in that hostel they have a picture of Bert Trauttman-Manchester City Goalkeeper.
Underneath the picture it said that Bert Trauttman broke his neck in one of the matches that he was playing.

I have looked on good old Wikipedia and yes they confirm that he did play for Man City.
But nothing is mentioned about him breaking his neck?
Is this true about him breaking his neck?
And...also I thought that when you broke your neck the chances are you will die from your injury. Apparantly not.
Any help appreciated

Bert Trautmann did not end up in a wheel chair he was walking round Maine Road for City's last game there in 2003as one of the guests of honour.
He broke his neck playing for City in the 1956 FA cup final he played the last 25 minutes with a broken neck which was not discovered till after the game and City went on to beat Birmingham 3-1.and was not replaced in nets
Bert played on till 1964 when he retired

If I remember correctly it was the 1956 cup final. He played on after he was injured and discovered 4 days later that he had fractured several vertabrae in his neck.. Apparently, he could have died at any moment but chose to play on.
The match was against Birmingham City and Manchester City won 3. 1 with Trauttmann saving the match. (don't forget, there were no substitute goalies in those days. Another player just put the goalies shirt on and play continued)

I believe it was in the 1956 Cup Final(or maybe 1954,I'm not certain!),and was one of the most famous stories in English FA Cup Final Folklore.
As for a broken neck being fatal,I suppose it depends on how bad the break was.

If you look at the Manchester City website www.mcfc.co.uk you should find information about Bert Trautman. There are also many books available about him.

Yes it is true he broke his neck. He collided with the goalpoast but played for the rest of the match whilst frequently clutching his neck in pain (although presumably not realising it was broken).

Also true he was originially a German POW

Bert Trautman was a German and he was actually a POW in this country. Bert broke his neck when he dived to save a goal and crashed into the goal post. he was an outstanding goal keeper, but he ended his time in a wheelchair. A great loss to british football.
