Tab is the abbreviation of Tabulator. To tabulate (tabulating) means putting something into a table or chart.

When a typist wanted to type a table, there was a lot of time-consuming and repetitive use of the space bar and backspace key. To simplify this, a bar was placed in the mechanism with a moveable lever for every position across the page. Initially these were set by hand, but later a "tab set" and "tab clear" keys were added. When the tab key was depressed the carriage advanced to the next "tab stop". These were set to correspond to the particular column locations of the table (hence "tab") being worked on. The tab mechanism also came into its own as a rapid and consistent way of uniformly indenting the first line of each paragraph.

The Tab key is located on the left just above caps lock.

Its function dates back to the days of the typewriter when it was used for 'tabulation' to align the start of some text in a vertical column. The typist would set tab stops on the carriage and pressing the tab key would advance the position to the next tab point.
You can still set tab points in MS Word.

In more recent times, it is used to advance a fixed number of spaces along a row and in combination with other keys to perform some keyboard shortcuts.
EG. Since the early days of Windows Alt+Tab has been used to switch between applications.

In some applications, such as Internet Explorer, it can be used to advance the cursor (move focus) from one field to another, for example when filling in an on line form.

It is located under the '~' key (in my laptop (Toshiba A-100 it is loocated under the '1' key), over the 'Caps Lock' key, in the left side of 'Q' key.

Its function:
1. In Word Editor (Microsoft Word, Notepad, etc.) : To create an indentation of a paragraph or to make a lot of spaces at a given range.
2. At Internet Browsing : At filling forms, press Tab to get to the next field.
3. At Windows : Press Alt + Tab to switch tasks (w/ window) press Windows logo key + Tab to switch tasks (w/o window)
4. At gaming : mostly games don't use tab, but you can remap any button to Tab

It is located on the left hand side of your keyboard above the caps lock and next to the "Q". or to the left corner of the "1".
This button indents your paragraphs and also can be used when you are filling out fields and want to jump over to another field/cell in various programs

It is above Caps Lock and next to Q. It has 2 arrows on it pointing in opposite directions. It is great to indent paragraphs, etc and really good for filling out forms.

It is on the left hand corner in the middle. It moves the cursor forward and jumps to the next field.

for me, its right above caps lock. in writing something (like in a word doc) it indents your writing 5 spaces, as if to write a paragraph. also, it can be used to move to the next section, in say an application online.
