H-P LightScribe DVD writer/CD writer - it came installed

Writes CDs just fine, but is not recognized by any of my DVD burning applications. It does read DVDs

Running XP Pro on a new H-P ACPI multiprocessor.

The DVD writer is HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-421L

The GSA drives are actually made by LG for HP.
The 421L model fails to show anywhere ... did you misread it or perhaps mistype it ?

In any case, I suggest going to the HP website (for your model PC ... if it is also HP) & downloading the latest firmware upgrade for the DVD drive.

HP has several posted & software compatability is one of the main reasons they are there.

I use a GSA-H20L & Nero recognizes it just fine.

Go to the Nero site and get the latest codec, also when you open the startsmart application, use the top drop down to select cd/dvd....you probably have just cd selected.

You may have to reinstall Nero. It recoginizes at the time of installation I believe.
