Sorry but IMO Gandhi was a very selfish and misguided man. His actions greatly assisted the enemies of freedom, both in the course of WW2 and after it. He has directly contributed to the disappearance of several independent countries (ex-protectorates within the "Raj"), caused the death of at least 5 milion people during the partition not to mention the deaths in the subsequent wars with Pakistan and China.

Did you know that Gandhi made young girls sleep in the same bed as him? He did this to prove his faith in his self control (he would not have sex with them). Never mind the psychological effects on the poor young woman.
I think the single parent with mulitple jobs, living in poverty that raised children who where successful in life are the greatest icons.
