It's NOT only men.

Almost everyone snores occasionally, while around 1 in 3 people worldwide snore regularly.

Snoring usually occurs when the airway at the back of the throat constricts, causing air to be inhaled at an increased speed and pressure. During sleep, the bottom jaw and tongue may fall back to the rear of the throat. This along with the soft tissue (tonsils, soft palate and uvula) vibrates, creating the antisocial and debilitating sound of snoring.

While snoring can be harmless, it may also be a symptom of Sleep Apnoea, a condition where the sufferer periodically stops breathing during sleep, for a few seconds each time. Sleep Apnoea occurs when the airway becomes completely blocked, causing the sufferer to wake briefly. They may not be aware of this, but the quality of their sleep can be severely affected.

Rob is correct. I would like to add that sleep apnea is a dangerous condition, not just an inconvenience for others in the same bedroom. It can damage the heart and even kill the snorer. If the man in question snores really loudly, get him to a sleep clinic ASAP! Sleep apnea is 100% controlled with the use of a device called CPAP. (And snoring stops completely.) He will sleep better (and so will everyone else in the house) and feel better. Don't delay, as sleep clinics often have long waits, and a heavy snorer needs treatment as soon as he can get it.

Good luck!

same reason women snore. their soft palate is in contact with their tongue, the air passes through in a partially interrupted flow causing the vibration of the air which makes the sound which keeps you up all night.
