Because it's completely random. Most psychics guess things and the law of averages and looking at how people re-act makes some of them seem more successful.
Like the other person said, why not predict lottery wins and the like? If they feel they are betraying their gifts then they could give the winnings to deserving charities.
The true answer is because it's a load of old nonsense.

They can't even predict when they need to go to the washroom.
If they could they would be very rich from picking lotto numbers and be very big in Vegas.
Just another legal scam people fall prey to.
