Practice is key! At first you might want to wear a LOT of pads cause you will fall a lot. If you go to a skate park try to stay at the easy stuff until you have mastered them, then go bigger. You will get cuts and bruises, and you will fall more times than you stand, but it gets easier, and you will master it if you work long enough. Don't give up and you wil be giving advice like this too.

wrist protecters, especially if you're frail or overweight, landing on your hands wrong can amage them for life.
PS: yea, I totally just ruine it for oyu, but don't be afraid of falling an skateboards, hunreds of thousands of people do it everyday, and they all started pretty clumsily.
Also, find a smooth place to start, like a quiet street, before you move onto sidewalk and pavement... cause the cracks inbetween sidwalk panels (yes, the little cracks), can actually throw off inexperienced riders.
