I always read all these thing about cbs and viacom and how there linked to each other. So are they the same thing?

Viacom is probably the parent company or group that owns this network - they own MTV.

yes viacom owns cbs and mtv they used to own blockbuster but blockbuster sepatred from them in 1999

Viacom owns CBS and also MTV,Showtime and others.
