I live in that and I can tell you that you don't want to go wasting your money on a bunch of wool-lined heavy parka type things
that are only good for one season.

All you need to do is get yourself a jacket that comes in two layers; the outer shell should be wind resistant and the inner shell should be polar fleece. You should be able to separate them either because they are fastened together by zippers or buttons; preferably zippers. It should also extend below your waste line. Make sure you can fasten your jacket right around your neck. A cheap scarf comes in handy as well.

Most of your body heat is lost through your hands and head.
Therefore you need half-decent mitts or gloves. You also need a hat or tuque. It is especially important that they are able to repel water or at the very least do not absorb water.

Also you may consider wearing wind breaking pants over your trousers or jeans.

Sturdy boots with grip are important. Avoid steel toed boots as they transfer the cold through the metal into your foot. Thick socks are important too. If your boot is of any substance, you should survive with just cheap sport socks.

If you are going for a journey in an automobile, it is imperative that you have some kind of emergency kit that will provide you with other things to keep the cold at bay.
