I can only guess here. Get in to the router by typing in http://192.168.0.1 that is the private IP of most routers. Your computer will be http://192.168.0.2 and your laptop http://192.168.0.3 and enter the user name and password. Look for those on the underside of the router. Check what channel it's on if it's wireless and configure the laptop to the same channel. Set the SSID (something like that) the ID of the router) Search for that ID using the laptop. Give the workgroup a name like WORKGROUP. You can come across Passphrase - that generates an encrytion kep for WEP or WPA - WEP is easier WPA more secure. Make sure you put the WEP key in both computers. If you use the XP wizard - that rarely works - you can transfer it with a memory stick (in theory).

I know what you mean. Have you checked that the laptop button for Internet is on? Also check that the card is enabled. Have you tried Ethernet and USB connection to the router? Sometimes you have to connect first time through Ethernet or USB and then you can go wireless. Did the software install properly on the Laptop? Make sure the Laptop and the PC have the same workgroup name. Lastly let Windows automatically detect Lan settings. Cant think of anymore but if you post more info in added details on here I might be able to add more tips or clues. Good luck.

Routers work similar to your network connections/dial up connections.

I use a wireless router. When setting it up I plugged the router into the phone socket, and added a wireless card to my pc, that came with software to set it up.

What happens in that case is that the pc will communicate with the router, but not with the internet, as the router needs to be connected.

In my case I opened up internet exploer and typed in the address bar voyager.home (this is the start page for my particular router, if yours is indeed wireless you will need to type http://speedtouch.lan)

I then entered my broadband username and password, clicked connect, and once that was connected I was able to surf the web.

Hope this gives you some indication to how they work for a start.

further info for your router can be found here :-

Are you using IE7?
I found that I couldn't access my BT Home Hub (a speedtouch in disguise) with IE7. Try accessing the IP address using Firefox.

try disabling the windows firewall while you install the router. router setup usually involves registering on the manufacturers website. the router will be invisible to windows. it's easier to set up if you have at least one computer connected physically to begin with.
