Ask how he felt going into the race, when during the race he knew he'd win, what kind of training he had done

It's an unfortunate fact of life that most athletes are rather inarticulate slabs of meat who tend to spout nothing but meaningless cliches and dull drivel, which sports reporters somehow think is illuminating for viewers/readers. If you want substantial quotes, talk to the coaches or the team administrators, because these are the puppet masters whose opinion counts more than anything.

How did you prepare for the race?
What is your prime motivation for the race?
What was the most difficult part of the race?
Besides you, who else deserves to win and why?
What aspect can you improve on?
What's next for you?
Why did the result turn out to be like this?
