lots of good advice above.
computers slow down for a number of reasons. virus or not, regularly u should:

Start> Control Panel Add/Remove Programs . Uninstall programs u don't need anymore.

Start> All Prog> Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup (it may take looong depending on how often u run it)

Start> All Prog> Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter (it may take longer than disk cleaning)

Open My Computer and "Right click" on your Hard Drive and choose Properties: make sure Indexing is turned OFF (only useful if u have very large archives ie library or bank) again may take looong depending on your hard drive size.

Start> Run and type in the box msconfig .it should open a little window. In the last Tab, Start Up, uncheck the programs u don't want to start when Windows loads and Apply.
look out for anything suspicius like yzxasdf.exe or any program u know didn't install yourself.
Restart the computer and check the box that will appear to confirm.

to check for Spyware I use "Spybot Search and Destroy" 'couse is free and has lot's of updates. www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

good luck and keep safe

That is a major problem with virus removal tools, downloading them and then removing an existing viurus. Virus happen to be tied to useful parts of your registry which your computer can not do well without. What that does is change your registry and that effects other parts of your computer performance because that particular removed part of the registry is used by your computer for other purposes.

Restore your registry to a date prior to when that virus was removed. Start, programs, Accesories,System, system restore, calendar pick date. Then identify the virus using your Antivirus, but DO NOT REMOVE IT.

Go to Google and find a manual method of removal of that virus by a change in your registry that works well and maintains the integrity of your computer. If you have problems with a certain virus so do others and the solution usually is on the Web posted.

Go to start, regedit and perform the necessary steps. Reboot and you should be back to proper speed.

Go to http://www.avast.com and on their homepage they have a Virus Protector Scan, run it and remove what it finds. THEN download their FREE Program. Sign off, reboot and install the Avast Program, and then Reboot again. Run a Virus Scan again and if anything turns up follow the instructions to get rid of it, This is a FREE Program and one of the best around. I have used it for years and am very pleased with it, and install it on ALL my friends computers and they are pleased with it also. Avast does real Time Scanning, and will stop viruses when they attack. You will have an Icon in the task bar at the bottom of your page, and it is updated automatically.

Probably because your files were spread out. Go to Start, all programs, accesories, system tools, disk defragmentor, and run that. However, when you do, you CANNOT work in the background of this.

Use everyone else's advise but also ensure to defragment your hard disk(s) and clean up TEMP files. A program called system mechanic can help.
