when i plugged out my earpiece from my ipod, the player stop singing? why?

ipod has that feature used to save battery power. there are no built in speakers so when the headphones are removed, it pauses the song

Every time I unplug my earbuds from my ipod, it stops playing. I just have to hit play again when I plug it into something else. I think thats just what they do.
