The championship of the NFL. It started when what is now the AFC was a different league, the AFL. In fact the first one was called the NFL-AFL championship game. Lamar Hunt, owner of the K.C. Chiefs of the AFL, thought it lacked "pizazz". Since college had a bunch of bowl games he thought the pro's should have one also.

He got the name when his son was playing with a Super Ball.

Lamar Hunt was the driving force in the creation of the AFL. The AFC championship trophy is named after him.
