Governor Thompson has proposed that Iraq be made into a federal form of government (like the US, Canada and Germany for example). There would be three states within the federation - Kurdish, Sunni and Shia. There would be a federal government to deal with defence and the economic infrastructure. All citizens would recieve royalty payments from oil production (like they do in Alaska). He recognises there would be major issues to still work out. Any comments or other ideas? The other candidates don't seem to have the guts to state their own positions.

George M - Good point. It seems that it was the breakup of the Ottoman Empire that really lead to alot of the existing problems. As you rightly point out - going back to the Ottoman borders would lead to revenue sharing issues.

Tommy Thompson is the only REGULAR GUY out there. He has a common sense approach to situations. This idea is superb! Remember in the early 90's he adopted legislation to get people off welfare and govt assistance with a 2 year plan. It had remarkable results. Bill Clinton some years later was looking at it as a model program, but didn't do anything constructive to make a national program! He kept saying we are still studying the results. But every year the numbers got better and better. Notcie also no other candidate from 2004 to now has adopted a new strategy and pr plan for Iraq; only to attack the President, which is the easy way out! Thompson/Romney sounds like a ticket that cant be beat!

I live outside the US so I have not heard about this proposal but it sounds interesting. The post war Iraq government are trying to preserve a country that was created by the Allies after WWI. The Allied post war carve up (mainly France and Britain) did not recognise any previous ethnic borders. So why not return to the border lines of the pre Ottoman Empire and try to get some stability in the area. What about a referendum on this point let the people decide. Apparently that is what democracy is all about. Put it to the people. The difficulty would be that all the oil production is in one area and the others may not like losing that. One of the reasons that Iraq invaded Kuwait in the first place.

The three states are what Bush has been trying to get them to do, the oil issue issue has already been decided and all revenues will be split 3 ways between the states.

The problem is getting the elected government of Iraq to buy into it.

It sounds like a good idea but, it is what we have already been trying to accomplish.

Of route. ideas-blowing question! I belonged to the Libertarian social amassing for years, regardless of the indisputable fact that I voted Republican. 0.33 activities are continuously losers. look what Perot did. Rush reported, years in the past, that the Libertarians ought to Disband and Take Over the Republican party. Rush has complete better for the Libertarian beliefs, than the Libertarian get jointly has ever been able to do.

Maybe Thompson idea is the best for Iraq. I can't think of a better solution.

Interesting. He may be on the right track.

But as long as some people think they can get a "better deal" by fighting than by negotiating, we will have problems.

Among other things, we have to make the cost of rebelling too high - this will also get people to cooperate.

I think that is up to Iraq to decide, we should have no role in what kind of government or how they run their country we have done enough dammage to the people and the country, we need to get out.

Sounds like a good idea, but the Iraqi government has to decide this.
