Faster surfing... it's more like SMARTER surfing...

Well, Firefox itself will speed up your surfing - especially with the "FasterFox" add-on.
Firefox - http://getfirefox.com/
Fasterfox - http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/

Why? IE asks for one file at a time - it's a bit like a lineup to get in a door. Firefox asks for several files at a time - it's like groups going under archways.
Another add-on to Firefox will help - Adblock Plus. It saves you bandwidth by not downloading those annoying ads!

Cleaning out your computer will probably help too, and make sure you're scanning for viruses and spyware at least twice a month.
Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

Using a Firewall to control programs who compulsively connect to the net every time you start your computer will help.
Zonealarm - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

I, personally, use all of these all the time.
