I can give you some verifiable and sourced facts about the death penalty. More and more people oppose it for practical reasons.
Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The extra costs begin even before the trial.
Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person.
Re: DNA
DNA evidence is available in no more than 10% of all murder cases. It is no guarantee that we will never execute an innocent person. It is human nature to make mistakes.
Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn't a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. People who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)
Re: Alternatives
48 states now have life without parole on the books. Life without parole means what it says. Being locked up in a tiny cell, 23 hours a day, with nothing to look forward to, is no picnic
Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn't reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in theory prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.
Last of all, opposing the death penalty does not mean a person condones brutal crimes or excuses the people who commit them. People should make up their minds using common sense based on solid facts.

I agree with you. If there is a case where the person definitely did it, I say they should be given the same thing.I think people are going by the scenario that not everyone who is convicted is guilty but if there is the overwhelming evidence, I think there should be capital punishment. We don't have the death penalty in Michigan but there have been some heinous crimes lately involving killing children, foster parents abusing kids causing death, just a few weeks ago these three punks followed this Iraq war veteran from getting his taxes done-they knew he was getting a big refund- and shot him, in front of two other people, witnesses. THAT made me sick-here is a guy who survives the fighting in a war, comes home and can't even walk down the street where he lives. To me, that deserves the death penalty. Those serial killers who sit there and detail their horror should also just be put down. They don't deserve to breathe ie. that BTK idiot.

I personally feel that killing someone is wrong - whether it is done "legally" or not. Only the Lord has the right to impose a judgement like that.
I also think that killing someone (capital punishment) is letting that person off easy. They should have to LIVE the remainder of their miserable lives every day, in a cell, dealing with what they did.

I'm for the death penalty. When someone does not know what it is like to lose someone to a horrible vicious crime I don't think they are going to be for the death penalty. Once someone loses at least one person close to them to murder then they usually change their minds. I have lost a few people to murderers, vicious murderers, too. Not a good world we live in. =)

I think that death penalty is considered a bit easy by some as they think you're dead in an instant without some pain inflicted. They think that they should be tortured throughout their life by giving them a life sentence.

Yes you do have a point but...if there is even any chance that the person is innocent...then we´d be giving the okay to killing an innocent person you know and he/she would never ever get the chance to prove their innocence...so i think thats the biggest reason why some people are against it.

Nobody has the right to take another persons life no matter what they did.
If you would kill a serial killer you would sink to their level and you can not call your self any better than that person is.

Im for it! Know why? cause if I let him sit and rot in prison, my tax dollars will go to his lazy ***. Well hell, If people start becoming *******, Ill shoot the bastards myself, I have no qualms about it. Let the bastards die. We should do it in a diffrent way though, no more of this "though you killed 10 people by slitting thier throats and making them die a horrible slow death, we're gonna put you to sleep before we kill you" crap, ELECTRIC chair, firing squads, and hangings should be re-instated. They deserve what they get for thier actions!

What did the death penalty teach such a person?
Nothing.
Let them suffer as long as possible and do slave labor.
Serves them right.

What's the bigger punishment, life in prison or the needle. I think life. I bet Charlie Manson would rather be dead.
