I am trying to find date of my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. Gran was in Newshame Hospital, Liverpool. She was put in plaster from beneath her arms to her legs. Has anyone an idea the length of time usualy spent in plaster in those years. The hospital gave them a party on the ward, so if i can find out how long her stay was, I might be able to find the actual date of marriage.

From 6 weeks to 3 months or even longer
depending on the severity of the fracture
also her healing power .

You did not mention whether, she was in" traction"
( used, to align and set , fractured femurs, in those days )
ie. ( Balkan beams, with weights and pulleys .).

She must have been, most uncomfortable,
in all that plaster, poor dear .

.
I am glad the hospital arranged, the Golden wedding celebration
there, as it would have, cheered them both up no end

Good luck in your quest

Well in 1979 i spent 3 months in hospital with same fracture and that was after what is called a "Kunchner Nail" (sp) operation which even then was a new medical technique as i was one of the very first in the country to have such an operation then. I spent a further 9 months having to wear a Caliper and used crutches. So going on that, i would say she was hospitalised for perhaps a considerbly much longer time, also as, older people dont generally heal as quickly as younger people...I was 16 at the time. These days they are in hospital for a mere few weeks now i gather. Hope this was useful to you and good luck. Kind regards. AM

It depends on all sorts of things...but a clean break of a femur (the body's largest bone by the way) would probably have taken about 12-14 weeks before starting to get mobile again.

Plaster casts used to stay on about 6 weeks then. Length of stay in hospital....probably 1-2 days.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

weeks and weeks. There was no surgery to correct this, as there was little or no antibiotics, and no bone pins, so traction healing and plaster of Paris and time it was. Loads of patients died from pulmonary clots and septicaemia from pressure wounds (although they were good about pressure area care back then!) and pneumonia in the elderly too, from staying in bed for weeks
