As far as I know....YES....
To a point....I have included a link of one of our local papers here....to show what I mean....although Mom grew up in the time this all took place...she remembers someone killing a bunch of people, but does not remember the details....

I don't know what all these people are reading or watching, but YEAH it's based on true events. In the one a few years ago with Jessica Biel in it, there was actual footage mixed in with the movie... It was either at the very beginning or the very end, I can't remember which, but it's factual.

Supposedly it's based on a true story. I have also heard rumors that it's not although there was supposedly actual footage at the end of the first movie.

TCM is not really based on one true story. The furniture made of bones, cannibalism, and "leatherfac" wearing a mask made of skin were all taken from the case of Ed Gein who was a necrophiliac/murderer from Wisconsin.
