The basic idea has been around since way back, for example the casket choice in The Merchant of Venice, but who thought of the question written down and a,b, c, d, with those little boxes? Obviously it was some lazy teacher who wanted easy marking and wanted the dumbos to get something but who was it?

Sometime during World War I, the most restricted form of questions—the multiple-choice testing format—was invented. It is not clear exactly who invented this format. Some have attributes the invention to Henry Goddard; others have attributed it to Edward Thorndike; however you can find more about it at "Handbook of Psychological and Educational Assessment of Children" or going through the following link:

I don't know who the person was, but they ought to be given a medal. They were a genius to create that form of exam.

If i were to guess it would be a teacher who had a cut/out template that could be placed over an exam page and this enabled the person to check right and wrong answers.

I had a teacher once that had a template she'd lay over the exam and thus graded each very quickly. Saves time reading the answers to questions

I think it is a game theory, always like a child . the mind learns through games. They are everywhere. the teacher used a method proved to be so accurate for the placing of objects abstract and thus may improve the chance for leading choice from reason away. and the gamble takes time away from the otherwise personal choice. The game and the flipping coin continue to be paid in both life and money. a double payment. from the audience. and suspense remains the hook. in one of life's silly games. ( opinion). A.M.H.
