I wonder if the magnetic key card safe. When you turn them in at the front desk your personal imformation is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the motel scanner. An employee can take a handful of cards home and using a scanning device, access imformation onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense. Simply put hotels do not erase imformation on these cards until an employee re-issues the card to the next motel guest.Should I keep card and take it home and destroy it by cutting it. If I do this can they charge me for a lost card.So my question is how safe are these cards.

I just quit my job at a hotel. You wouldn't believe how much information we easily have access to that we can take advantage of. And true, some seriously important information doesn't get thrown away, or DOES get thrown away but doesn't get shredded. There is no actual answer to your question because it all depends on the employee of the hotel. This is why I like to stress the fact that while it's true that the "customer is always right"...guests should DEFINITELY treat the people accommodating them with the same respect. Because not only are they accommodating them, they have access to...everything.

I work for a Hilton branch hotel. The only information stored on your keycard is what room you are in and how long the key should remain active. If you are only there for a 2 night stay, your card key is useless by 11:59am. No names or personal information is stored on these cards at all. However, we do have access to your full CC number and address and such. We have to use out ID to access this personal information of yours but cant do it without just cause and it logs who's CC we fully view. Other than that, it only lets us know the last 4 digits by default :)

Basically there is no need to worry about information on your magnetic room key, and us employees are frequently checked up on and logs are kept in the computer to monitor us :)

I hope this helps :)

No, they dont' have ANY information on them about you. The safe is just there for the hotel to use to make money on securing your "valuables". I think that hotels encourage their employees to steal from customers to promote the use of the safes, which are the real money makers.

Key card only contains the information about what lock it operates plus, usually, its period of validity. There's nothing personal on there.
