Some people would put not getting paid for overtime. For me, it really depends on how much OT. I generally work 40-45 hours a week including evening conference calls with Asia. I'm salaried.

But knowing what position you are in, how many hours you are expected to work, and that you are NOT getting OT upfront, kind of negates the fact that I don't get paid. My annual salary more than covers my lack of OT pay AND I get many other perks including flexible hours (I can show up to work between 6-10am and put in my time for that day).

BUT, it is possible for someone not to make good money, get expected to work 80 hr/week and not get paid OT...they would probably say no OT is a big disadvantage. Know the story before taking the job.

One of my biggest disadvantages in a salary job is that I sometimes have to work around others. Knowing that the hourly's work a fixed schedule, if I want to talk to some of them, I have to be in work at 3am....or maybe I work til 6pm and they all leave at 2pm. Sometimes just a big inconvenient.

I really can't come up with anything else...mostly positives being salaried.

I just started working at a salary-paying job. The only disadvantage that I know of so far is that if you work overtime, you certainly do not get paid overtime. But the advantage works right against it...you can refuse to go to work (if you won't get in trouble of course), or leave early and still get paid the same amount. I should actually star this question because I'd like to know of any others =P

As opposed to commission?

Well, you receive only the same amount for every check whereas you have the potential to earn more with commission. You will most likely also have to pay taxes with a salary based job and you might not recieve your paycheck on payday if you miss a day or two of work.

You'll be paid the same amt on your paycheck no matter how many hours you work. You will miss out on chances to get overtime. Why work 45hrs and still get paid for 40 when you can get time and a half for the extra 5hrs. Don't shortchange yourself.

You may come to a point where you are doing more than what your "salary" is. When you reach that point, it's time for negotiation with the boss.
