is it too old to handle a cable modem?

Not at all :)

All you need is a network card (15$) if your computer doesnt have one.

Some internet providers may require at least 128MB of RAM to run their installation disk to set up your modem and such, but they can walk you through this over the phone without the disk and set up your account on their end :)

We had two Gateways and they only lasted 7 years. I went to Dell and am extremely satisfied. More than with Gateway, for sure.

wow a 7yrd old gate way you might aswell of said a brand new packrd bell....i hope you get a new computer soon before that gateway goes computt on you im surprised...thats the first gateway ive heard thats lasted more than 2 years.
