Real bamboo is not an underwater plant and cannot be planted in aquariums. They will only die and rot and foul the water. That said, I love bamboo in aquariums, so lucky for us, they have some very cool looking fake ones. Fake bamboo is the only kind of bamboo you can put in aquariums. To plant, just bury the base in the substrate. Good luck and have fun!

lol i have venice girls bamboo in my goldfish and it looks great -- i also have fan shrimp (aka bamboo, wood, singapore, filter shrimp) that love crawling on it. the real stuff won't grow in an aquarium. it will tolerate being underwater for a while and then die and muck up your aquarium. you also have a good chance it will grow mold and you really don't want to introduce mold into your aquarium.

a lot of houseplants are trying to be aquarium plants. find a reputable dealer. i have seen lots of dracnea (lucky bamboo, ribbon plant) neanthe bella (parlor palm) and mondo grass -- all will tolerate living underwater for a short time and then die.
