it all depends on how you learn it. i find that it is a lot more helpful and easy if you learn from other people who already know how. i learned from my fabric arts class in school. online instructions and videos help, but not if you are learning it for the first time. if you are a fast learner you can pick it up quickly because it is pretty simple. just like anything, you have to practice because it can get frustrating at times to get used to the motions. but once you get the hang of it, you'll be knitting like crazy and the end result is very rewarding. good luck and have fun!

It's pretty easy to learn how if you have some time to practice. Ask someone in your school or your church to help you. You might be surprised how many people know how to knit.
You could also ask someone at the public library to help you find a knitting "buddy".
Or start a small knitting club and help each other. There are plenty of instructions on the Internet.

I learned the basics of the knit and purl stitch in one evening at a knitting class at my local yarn store. But it took finishing a few small projects before I really felt comfortable with knitting. Like anything, it just takes practice. :)

It didn't take me long at all. My Mum taught me, she helped me cast on and then after going through one row of normal stitches I was fine to knit on my own. It isn't too difficult. It might be harder learning from something written rather than being shown but it shouldn't take more than an hour or so.
If you want to be doing fancy things it takes a little longer, but once you've got the basics down you're all set.

You can learn the basics in one day... knitting is one of those things where only practice will make you the master.
There is this website that has very self explanatory videos... http://www.knittinghelp.com It should be a good start. :)
