The time in the other answers is correct - I generally planned on it being 9 hours - tops. Another answerer had good information about the toll road to save time. I recommend taking Highway 99 instead of I-5 once you get over the grapevine (north of Los Angeles - you won't miss it). While it's officially still just a highway and not a freeway, most of the way it is three lanes each side instead of two on the I-5. There are a lot of smaller towns this route, and more gas stations (and lower gas prices). You'll find it less expensive to eat, have more choices, and usually fewer large trucks.

Pepperdine would be number two. The most beautiful, scenic campus imaginable, is UC Santa Cruz, built in the middle of a redwood forest, it is spectacular. From some buildings, you also have an ocean view (not too far to walk to from campus). Edit to Add: to Hyek re "Someone has also mentioned UCLA. And even though I think that it's a great school, I think it's in a crappy area, which is unsafe. And many people agree with me on this. " What are you talking about? UCLA is surrounded by $2 - $5 Million dollar homes and Westwood Village. Go 2 blocks north and the homes sell for $10 Million and more. Have you confused one of the the top schools in WORLD with USC (University of Spoiled Children) in South Central LA? -[UCLA, Class of 1971]

If you are driving, try to avoid arriving in Los Angeles during rush hour....or your trip will be much longer. If traveling down 405, there is a toll road that you can get on around Costa Mesa that joins up with Hwy. 5 south of the bottleneck where 405 and 5 joins. Take this route if traffic is heavy on the 405.
