Hmm - some anachronism there as it was released in 1971, before punk and acid rock really came on to the market. But agree with 'overlooked gem' - yes, indeed, though never overlooked by me! I am still a big fan of the whole avant-prog Canterbury scene.

Here's a tale that may explain my musical taste & general mental health. When I was about 11, there was a record shop round the corner from my house, run by 2 hippies. (Any Weegies reading this may even remember 'Listen' records.) I saw said 'Camembert Electrique' in the window for 58p! I bought it, played it & loved its weirdness so much that for my 12th birthday, I persuaded my mum to take me to see Gong play! This experience, along with the thick fug of dope smoke in the hall obviously horrified my mother, but I loved it & to this day, can still remember Bloomdido's hat, which was a whole swan on his head! Gong are one of the most original, influential bands ever, & I'll always go see them when they're in town. Would you like some tea???

Gong's "Camembert Electrique" was a statement of intent 'par excellence'. In attitude it is pure first generation punk and ranks alongside The Stooges first album as a seminal work for what was to follow several years later.

It defies categorisation and appeals on many levels, from the raw power of songs like "You Can't Kill Me", to the space rock of "I Am Your Animal" and the jazz-influenced masterpiece that is "Fohat Digs Holes In Space".

It also boasts some of the best drumming ever heard, by the much missed Pip Pyle.

I'm off to listen to it now. Thanks for reminding me of it!.
