Some cars (like the Kennedy era Presidential Limo) actually, had a rim of steel mounted to the wheel, with a rubber layer over it. That way, if a tire was shot out, it could keep on driving with some level of control (an early RUN-FLAT tire).
Rubber tires, because they are flexible, will absorb some of the roughness and irregularities of the road, giving a much smoother ride than a solid material would.

Well years ago wheels were made of wood. With the advancement of faster cars thy found that hitting bumps would jar your eye teeth loose. So thy looked for something better. Thus rubber. After finding that it cushioned the ride and with the advent of shocks the ride became smoother and thus rubber was used on all of today's cars. There are not just 1 kind of tire. There are all kinds of tires but, that is another story.
Thank you for your question and I hope I answered it for you.

Good Question.
Well for one rubber is soft so its good for ride comfort.Rubber also sticks better to the road in most conditions. Also wears more slowly. But rubber is also non-conductive.Doesn't pass electricity so when its lighting and your driving you don't become barbeque.
