He recently passed away. It was Billy Preston. Or at least he is often referred to as such. He played piano at the George Harrison tribute in 2002. He played on a lot of the studio albums of the Beatles, and can be seen in a lot of footage.

Of course there were also the drummer prior to Ringo, if that is who you mean...there was Pete Best. And there was Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bassist, who is sometimes called the fifth Beatle. He named the band after the pattern of Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Pete was replaced as drummer by manager Brian Epstein, and Stuart had left the band to pursue art instead of music, and to get married, but he died suddenly and unexpectedly at age 21.

George said (during the nomination in the Rock n` Roll Hall of Fame in 1988) there were probably a hundred fifth Beatles but the real two 5th Beatles were Derek Taylor and Neil Aspinall.

If not Pete Best, for a while Clapton was considered. Paul and George had an argument where George stormed out. John shrugged it off and said they could always get Clapton to replace him. John actually asked him to join the Plastic Ono band too.
