It is the name for the movie industry in India, based in Mumbai, formerly Bombay. You take the "B" from Bombay, use it instead of the H in Hollywood, and voila! a cute name for the very large and successful movie industry in India. They make more movies there than Hollywood does. Bollywood movies are famous for their song and dance numbers. Basically its a movie with multiple music videos in it. That's where most popular Indian music is released first. There are all genres- historical, drama, comedy... Most are in Hindi, or Hindi and English, but there are some in other Indian languages, too. I'm American, and enjoy Bollywood movies a lot. The last one I saw was especially good- a drama about whether one or two people can make a change in their country, or if its too big a job to even try. It was called Rang di Besanti. You might want to rent a couple and see what you think.

Bollywood refers to India's film industry, the film industry largest on the planet. The name is derived from Bombay, India and Hollywood, California. The films tend to feature a great deal of song and dance and elaborate sets and costumes. The style of acting tends to focus directly on the performance, rather than on the internal, emotional aspects Hollywood actors strive for (and rarely achieve). I have not seen any real Bollywood movies, but if you would like to get an idea of the contrast between Hollywood and Bollywood, I highly recommend the film "Bride and Prejudice," which features a fusion of American, Indian, and British influences. You may think it's weird, but I liked it.

I hope that answers your question.

The term Bollywood is pejorative to anybody who knows about the world of Hindi Cinema. It was originally coined as a mocking term about Hindi Cinemas which showed no creative originality and were pale imitation of the vulgar Hollywood films. Every Hindi film these days is a an obscene and pointless collection of song and dance{?} ensembles and these features have no connection at all with the story,There is no variety in the productive aspects of such films and the present day actors do hamming rather than acting.
Having said that there are independent film makers who are innovative, who care for the sheer artistic side and who produce great films for the advancement of the arts. Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Roy and Adoor Gopalakrishnan are some of the people who belong to this category.
Further, there were extraordinary great actors in the past: Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Raj Kapoor etc but today's actors and actresses cannot hold a candle to anyone of them. The Hindi Cinema and its variant in other languages of India are nothing but shameful explotative money making devices which convert every human emotion into a pathetic and cheap enterprise.
