Instead of using salt to melt the ice you could use sand to make it not slippery. If you get the sand from the city lots (in iowa it's free in the winter) it usually has some salt added to it. Sand is a much nicer way to go. It is pet friendly. :) Or, avoid the ice to begin with by placing cardboard in your driveway and then yanking it up after it snows or whatever. Just a thought.

The best answer is salt, but the person who mentioned that it chews up concrete is right. Concrete driveways are too expensive to dump buckets of salt on. If you want traction.... mar the ice with a metal rake, dump sand over the worst areas where people need to walk or drive, or just wait until spring.

The cheap way: Sprinkle salt all over it.
The costly way: Rip it up and install a heated driveway. Heated water pipes inside the concrete will do it.

Put salt on the ice

the suggestions to use salt are good, it is very effective, however you should be made aware that over time this will decay and crumble the concrete, little by little from the top surface down.
I've used salt for years and years, and replaced my share of concrete, but it's been worth it for safety.
