I moved to Texas and everyone thinks it's funny that I say "pop," but actually, I think it's more popular to say "pop" than "soda" and way more popular than saying "coke" (come on now).

Every time I say "pop" I get weird looks here, but I try to be stubborn and stick to my guns about it. Will you all please decide for me if I should switch to "pop" or "coke?" I don't want to give in to the pressure but if I have to, I will.

You may be an American, but in Canada, everywhere it is called "pop". Snootier people call it a "soft drink". "Soda" is properly an informal name for club soda, or carbonated water, and NOT for any drink containing sugar or flavourings, so you're in the right.

But what do you expect? It's Texas, the place where, at weddings, they drag black men instead of tin cans.

If you really want to play with their heads, after they ignorantly call it "soda", you could substitute "soft drink", "carbonated beverage", "bubbly refreshment", or "fizzy drink". Nothing annoys the uneducated more than their lack of knowledge being shown to them.

I was born and raised in New York City, and everyone called it soda. When we moved to Nevada in the 80s, many of the people there (who came from various other states) called it pop. A few called it soda pop. Now I think everyone knows what you mean whether you ask for a soda or a pop.

It doesn't matter. Here, we call it soda. When my mom worked at a drive-in restaurant in Colorado an a Californian tourist asked for a soda, she brought out an ice-cream soda, like a root beer float. The customer actually wanted what is called pop in Colorado - y'know, the stuff that comes in a can.
