Talented, well-rounded singers and song writers no longer exist.....What happened to the Princes, Michael Jacksons (pre-kiddie obsessions), Eric Claptons, Bob Marleys, etc? You know the folks that made music that rocks hard even today. Heck, I can throw on "When Doves Cry" or "Let's Go Crazy" and rock out all day. Gone are the days of music with substance...why don't we as consumers demand excellence anymore? Why are we ok with mediocrity and less (i.e. Paris Hilton, William Hung--ick)? There didn't used to be a place for these people. Singers actually had to be able to sing. And we knew they could sing because when they were in concert there wasn't a track blaring and drowning out their vocals--they actually SANG!

How true it is. Its all manufactured music these days. They can make a shocking singer sound good, and they usually mime when they do a concert.

it's a matter of opinion for what is good music. As for the part about where these peoples music is still "good" today, you can't really judge the new music by those standards because they haven't been around for forever. in the time period of the songs you're talking about, was every musician a platinum record artist? No! Also, some musicians are just celebrities that had a childhood dream to have a record or two and have the neccesary money and resources. As for the whole William Hung incedent, some people thought that it was so funny that they gave him a chance to make one cd and that wasn't right.
The last part of the complaint aout tracks blaring out the vocals is only a little bit right. They turn up the bass and background a little high sometimes to cover up bad lyrics but music now isn't as much about the lyrics anymore. It's about the beat. Some of us who still listen to the lyrics, though, and they aren't all bad. Mostly their pretty good. Not every body likes all that older music. Age, such as when your best years are also affect what music you like. The music is a way of holding onto that when it passes.

I apologize for anything offending I may have said attached to the age argument. I do have a strong opinion about this because some people I know complain whenever they hear a newer song because they think it sucks because it is not in their favorite genre. Please keep an open mind when it comes to this stuff because you may actually hear something you like.

They exist in some ways. Clapton and Cale's "Road to Escondido" album is good music in my opinion. I think the biggest problem is this: The best musicians were developed before they were in a mainstream band. Sticking with Clapton as an example, he was already a great guitarist when he got in his first big band. He developed a few new styles, but he never got "better," because he had nowhere else to go. Today, garage band quality musicians (who's music is rather easy to play actually) will have a hit song or two and stick with that style. They never seek musical improvement. I think this leads to the several "fifteen minute" musicans of today. Also, the technology used in recording music. In the 60's, 70's, and most 80's, the studios recorded the songs as they were sang. What you hear on a Clapton record, you hear in a Clapton concert. Today, when they sing in the studio, there's a computer that see's the exact in-tone pitch their trying to hit. If they don't hit it, the studio engineers can bring it up or down to that exact in-tone level. So what sounds like good singing on a record, in live performance can seem like two different things. I also would like to note the lost art of the guitar solo. Music today focuses on a beat and something to move to, it's easy come and easy go. Whereas "Layla," "Hotel California," and "Stairway to Heaven" will never die.

Um if you are watching American Idol and listening to the media for inspiration you don't have the mindset for good music. There are plenty of extremely talented artists who express themselves with content, you just typically won't find them hyped up by the media.
