Yes he was hispanic.... I think in the movie they say why his manager wanted his name to be ritchie valens, but i'm not sure. It might be is born name though i'm drawing a blank sorry.

Yes. His last name was Valenzuela but they changed it so he wouldn't appear so "ethnic" to music buyers in the fifties. He has a Mexican background.
