i have been playing the piano for about 2 years now. there is this one song that i am currently learning called "first love" and im getting pretty far in it.
heres the thing:
sometimes i will TOTALLY forget a certain part of the song. like i will be playing through the song with ease and all of a sudden BAM! i forget the notes and it messes up the whole song for me.

usually it doesnt happen but sometimes it does. the worst part is it happens to me a lot when im playing in front of people. and its never the same parts that i forget, its always random parts of a song. does this happen to anyone and how the hell do you avoid it.

Oh, it happens to me all the time. that just means u need more practice. do u play with music. It usually means you have memorized the song. You need to make sure you sight read and follow yourself on the page. It usually works unless you zone out. and if u zone out, try to stay zoned out. . .(which is really hard) I hate when I mess up like that. See if what I suggested helps.

It's always been hard for me to play for people for that same reason. For me I think it's because with other people in the room, I'm focusing on them more than what I'm doing. I'm so worried that I will mess up in front of them that I actually do mess up. When I pretend I'm alone, I can play without the mess-ups! But it's hard to pretent they're not there. The more I practice and memorize the song, the less this happens.

Dude, you are locked. Just play from the heart. The talent you have for even asking this question is already there. Do you know how many people cant play a damn chord on the piano? Just keep working at it. It is already inside of you. Play the piano like you eat you fat fokker.

No this is a common thing to happen. for me i always am looking at the music and never my hands, that way if i do get ahead or mess up im already looking at the music so i know where my hands need to go/should be at that time. Good luck, keep practicing!

It does happen indeed. When you play in front of people, play it from the note book with full concentration.
Since you are playing it from memory. Otherwise, from heart shouldn't happen.
It has something to do with your "first love'.

I m learning piano too and am new to reading staff notations. I suggest u practice both hands separately first. Once both hands r used 2 their individual phrases, practice with both hands. This helped me, I hope it helps u too. Happy playing!

Rest your brain, You need a break once in a while from playing the same song over and over.
