Why do you think gandhi topi means the topi wore by gandhi? Here topi refers to peace. It means he encouraged peace.

Actually I've a doubt on the correctness of your question. Are you sure about it that Gandhiji have never used Gandhi Topi throughout his life at least single time also.
Anyway your question is really interesting.

the answer i am going to write is real and true & kindly don't make fun of it :
gandhiji was bald , having no hair on his head during the days he became famous.as this paricular topi is almost round , plain and smooth ; it resembles a bald head when viewed from a distanse.
secondly, during the swadeshi movement , usage of all british things was stopped and indigenous(india made) encouraged.due to lack of superior cloth manufacturing technology, hand made khadi/cotton clothings were used.when topi's were made with hands using cotton thread and that too very fast for more quantity , they acquired a natural smooth and rounded appearance.

In those days mercerised cloths with black cap was a typical dress code of learned people.
Then came the british suit/pant shirt.
Common people couldn't afford both.
Gandhiji always promoted khadi. This way he took care of common people and boycott on british cloths was also possible. This khadi cap then became famous as Gandhi Topi as it was widely accepted.
