i have a pretty old tv and don't have cable or dish network. so i need a new tv that's HD compatible i suppose... and then just hook it up and automatically the channels come in high-definition with no cost?

Some channels come in HDTV, but not all of them. Usually local channels (KSBY, ABC, FOX etc) come in HDTV. The technology hasn't grown enough for every station to come in HD. To get channels in HD you do need some sort of Cable, it's what converts it from normal to HD.
