Generally it takes 6 to 8 months to recover and go back to your normal activities. http://www.knee-injury.net/acl_surgery.html

It depends on how badly you've torn it and your level of fitness and your age. If you're young and in good shape, you'll heal more quickly. Blood circulation and strength of surrounding muscles will help.
If you need surgery (not always necessary) it'll likely be 6 months before you can return to competitive sports. If you don't compete in sports or if your sports don't involve jumping or twisting.. don't have the surgery. You might be OK with just a knee brace for sports.
I had a complete tear. I walked out of the hospital after day surgery. I was in physio every day for about 2 months. It was very tough work. I was able to start running a few months after the surgery. No jumping or twisting sports for 6 months. No deep knee bends/squats ever.

I tore my ACL, MCL and LCL and dislocated my knee the day before I entered freshman orientation at college in August. They told me it was a sprain at the ER, so I went to college on crutches and walked around on it for a week. Went to the doc, figured out that it was a lot worse, and obviously I had to have surgery. My injury was pretty severe. It took me about 2 months to get off crutches, with about 4 months of rehab. I went back to school in January. I was walking, but it took me quite a while before I could run or walk long distances. Unfortunately, it will be a while, but don't rush it or you'll re-injure yourself.

9 times out of 10 you need surgery, i was a basketball coach for 3 years, before i got in a fight with the other teams coach. :-(
Anyways, after surgery stay off it for like 1 to 2 weeks, they give u a brace to wear when doing high stress activities. I'd suggest letting it heal pretty damn well, probobly a month or 2 before you start training again, because if u re-tare it, ur out for a while

I tore mine, but never had it fixed. I decided it would be better off for me if i strengthened the muscles around it and get flexibility back. I mean, hey you only get to play high school sports once. Im still playing pick-up games on it with no problems. Cheryl...your very wrong! I played football(full contact/pads) 1 1/2 years after my injury and I'm still going strong without a brace and I never had surgery.
