There are a lot of variables, but you should be able to start the process by contacting your local Children's Aid or Family Services or Foster Parents' association. Depending on where you live they may have different names for these organizations. They will want to know all about you and your wife, such as why you want to adopt, whether either of you have criminal or psychiatric histories, experience with children, etc. This is to make sure you can provide a safe and stable environment for your future son or daughter.

Even if you do have a criminal/psyche record, they will take into account the nature of the offence and when it occurred (or the nature of the psychiatric problem. Many times they will ask you to foster first, then apply for adoption. If you are willing to take a child who is older, a different race, or physically or mentally challenged, you will not have to wait as long - sad but true. But do be sure you are in it for the long haul; many of these children have had no stability in their lives and to take a little one in and then find you can't keep him forever can be devastating - both to him and to you.

Best of luck - you seem to have your hearts in the right place.

Cheers,

Samlet
