ugh, I just know some @sshole's going to flag this question..
Anyway, it really depends on the person.
Everyone's heard the old.. "Hey man, did you know that if you trip 'cid 7 times, you're automatically legally insaine?!" ...That's not true. What IS true, is that LSD kill brain cells, and you will eventually go crazy, if you consume more than your body can handle. (Either at once, or in the span of your lifetime).
If you're asking how many hits is too much, at once.. I'd say 3-4. Again, it's all personal preference, and how much your body can handle. There are TONS of factors that go into this. I've seen people take 8 hits, and have a great time.. but then again, I've seen people who couldn't handle 1 hit.

In a life time or in one sitting?
It depends on your tolerance for the one sitting.
In a lifetime, well... who can really know? We don't have all the data on what could be truly bad that wasn't just accentuated in the natural. I find that LSD just exposed the mind to awe and confusion leading to an alteration of perception for the rest of life. It can be very spiritual as well as terribly frightening. It is all VERY relative. Cop-out I know, but that is just the way it is with so many variables.

The problem with your question is that you never know the quality of the drug your taking until you've already taken it. The quality today is not as good as it was it the 60's - 70's. Then I knew people that had taken even 25 hits at once, some times resulting in bad trips. If you do any be careful.

well i overdosed on 7 hits on my 21st birthday back in 1995. apparently there was way too much stricknine (sp?) i did the ole crappy flop and pissed my pants. the doctors said i was lucky i didnt have a heart attack. now i had done alot of acid before that it wasnt my first time by any means. but i got ahold of a bad batch and i even knew the guy who made it personally so its not like he would intentionally harm me. found out later that another dude did die on the same stuff so for gods sake be careful, eat mushrooms instead, much cleaner and all natural. you see stricknine is the poision found in snake venom just so you know and its used in making acid at least some kinds of acid anyway.

hey if you want to do it maybe you want to be clear as to why?
its not just a holiday though it can turn out that way.
a true trip is one where in you lose your self .
if this does not happen then you have not tripped
so take enough to feel it then about a week later take more
until you know that the next higher amount is gonna blow your mind
just enough but not too much.
then find the proper set and setting and go to it
anything less is purile recreation.
just go for it or don't you'll be on your way anyway.
but remember, its not neccesary!

How many LSD hits is too many? If you mean LSD like in Lysergic acid diethylamide, then the answer is: "One hit is too, too many."

You can never have too many! Unless of course you have, in which case, you've had too many.
I find a good indicator to be the frequency of conversations about fractals and the golden ratio.
