You should read magazines like Muscle and Fitness or Men's Health or Men's Fitness, as they have articles about this all the time.

Start out with exercises that just use your body weight, like crunches and pushups and squats. Then as you adjust, you can start using weights. 8-12 repetitions, where you can't lift more than 8-12 times without stopping, will build strength and muscle. More reps, like up to 20, will not build muscle but will make you toned. You'll also have to watch your diet and eat healthy foods. You can also try a video like "The Firm" which will have you looking great in about ten workouts.

For muscle toning, very light weights with a lot of reps, 100 or so. For strength, heavy weights with less reps, 8-10.
