I know that they are supposed to protect him, but from what?? the president'r car is supposed to be armored, isn't it??
so, y r they there?? they are only needed when he is out of the car, y do they have to run around his car?

They don't usually; the motorcade is going too fast for someone to run alongside for that long. When they do, it's usually because the motorcade is going slow (for some reason), and the guys on the side are able to head off anybody who chooses to get in front of the motorcade, and try to stop it.

Once the motorcade starts rolling, they don't want to stop it until it gets to it's destination. It's safer that way.

You really have to admire those guys. They only have one job, and most people couldn't mentally make themselves do anything like that.

remember the movie "saving private ryan?" the dude ran up to the tank and stuck a "sticky" bomb on the track. that situation could happen. so the sercret service run along side the limo to ensure the vehicle's safety and the occupants' safety.
