So last night at 3:15AM i heard growling, snorting and scratching noises right outside my bedroom window in California. The nosies where so loud that it woke me up. Note: there are no dogs in the neighborhood. I was soooooo scared i turned on all three lights in my room and looked out the window and found a HUGE raccoon. He looked at me stood on his hind legs and growled at me. I closed the window and took my table lamp and pretended like it was torch to scare him off. He went away, now i'm afraid to open my window. the raccoon was huge he was the size of a baby bear. He looked like he could eat me alive! Can raccoons harm humans? what should I do next time this happens?

I live in the mountains of North Carolina, so we're pretty much used to these critters.

More than likely, he's searching for some kind of a food source. Do you have garbage or something outside that would draw him to your house? If so, you might want to secure that.

Normally, raccoons aren't going to bother you, as far as them initiating an attack on you. If you threaten them, they can respond by attacking you, so you have to be careful about that. Secondly, if you have a dog, you might want to keep him/her away from any raccoons. Don't let them fool you, they can fight visciously, and many dogs have met their match with a raccoon.

The main threat of a raccoon is rabies. Being a nocturnal animal, they run around all night. But if you see one in the daytime, possibly acting irratic, then there is a good chance the animal is rabid. NEVER feed them!!

My advice to you is to check and make sure you have nothing in your yard that is drawing them. Secondly, do not confront them. And finally, if you can, notify your local Animal Control officers and tell them that you have a raccoon running around your yard. They can set up humane traps for them, and relocate them to where they can do no one any harm.

Best of luck.

Well, that can depend, if the raccoon has rabies you should be afraid but if it doesn`t you shouldn`t be very afraid. Either way, I would keep my window closed if I were you.

Yes, a coon of any size could seriously injure you, rabies or no rabies. Take Trisha S's advice, they'll set a trap and catch it and test it for rabies and if it has the disease they will destroy it and if not, they'll relocate it back to the wilderness (where it will eventually find it's way to civilization again).
