I know he's this purplish looking stump of a thing but never really understood if he was something like the Hamburgler.

Grimace is a French word that means 'big sweet.' I just discovered on wikipedia that he represents the McDonalds milk shake line. Also, that he was intended to be a character that represented all that was yummy as being Ronald's friend.
I always thought that he was a dinosaur. The pre cursor to Barney.

You're funny.....I don't know. It looks like they just just put a furry costume together and stuffed a tall guy in it. The Hamburgler was a shorty, nothing like Grimis.

According to Wikopedia and the MacDonald's website, he doesn't specifically represent anything. However, they use him as the character to represent milk shakes.
