This happened in 1989 Ask your parents they probably remember watching it on TV. The thing that stands out in my mind was watching one of the students walk out in front of a tank to try stopping it.

Go to
news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/...
/4/news10_249600/2496277.stm Or if that comes up error, type in tiananmen massacre, and then scroll down to BBc onthis day,14, 1989 I typed in beside Yahoo and got this site. Also video, very dark but good. Gives you the flavor of that time.
this site has pictures, the first one of the tanks lined up to stop the protesters, who were college students, who wanted democracy.
I remember watching this on television.
One young man stepped in front of a tank and stopped all five tanks from advancing for a time.
Now American photographers had come to photograph this and their vehicles had small american flags attached to the front fenders, and the Chinese people would cheer, they thought we had come to help them. At that time, America had a good reputation in other countries.
Deng Xiaoping was one of the leaders behind the massacre.
The tanks did move forward. There are 50 images of the massacre. Young people laying covered in blood, the hospital, which looked like a morgue.
And be sure and add to your report what happened to the college students after they were arrested. They were imprisoned and they made most of the stuff which has come to be sold in the us.
Quilts, all kinds of crafts, marked, made in China. they lived in horrible conditions and were whipped if they did not meet their quota. For years I did not buy made in China, becuse of this.
They students wanted democracy and they got life in prison. It was a sad time. Be sure to download some of the pictures, and start your report with the tanks, I believe 5 of them lined up. Thats what I most remember the tanks, moving forward, crushing the bodies of the students.

Google should find something. The basic data is that some years ago (1989, I think), a large number of Chinese people demonstrated against the government in Tienanmen Square, one of the larger gathering places in the capital city. The demonstration was ruthlessly put down, with considerable loss of life.
