Does he have too much time on his hands, likes clothes cleaned 'just so', or is this a way to mingle with normal people away from the trappings of stardom?

Clapton has always been a working man. Even if during a heroin addiction he sold guitars for money, he's had a blue collar background. He was born in Surrey, which at that time was a true blue-collar town (today it's actually a pretty afluent place). He had worked for his grandfather laying bricks. He does have some free time during touring. Before concerts he likes to play foosball. He does have a "just so" type of personality. For instance, he likes all of his strings on his guitar to have a measured action of exactly 1/8 inch. There's been instances where one had observed several of Clapton's guitars laying around with a ruler beside them; he had been measuring the strings' action himself. However, if he were trying to get away from the trappings of stardom, I imagine he'd spend time with his family.

You'd have to ask Mr Clapton to know for sure, but it's probably because he's a down to earth guy who doesn't need an entourage of servants attending to his every need.

Think about it, don't you do your own laundry? And if you were on a long trip, you'd find a laundromat in whatever town you were in and wash your own clothes, right? So he's doing the same thing.
