The United States is hated because it's policies are currently dangerously out of balance between the goals of war and the goal of peace. Bush has the country moving toward Authoritarian domination and subjugation of the middle and lower classes so they can fund the American Military in a War to end all wars.
The foreign policy created by Bush looks and seems to be, win or lose at any cost.
It looks like Bush is actually driving to start a major war with Iran, if that is the case, then get ready to join the Army and fight in the Middle East for a mentally ill juvenile adult who is in Command of our Military.
What a mistake. I hope I am wrong but it feels really bad in this Country now, right now, because Bush has changed our philosophy of defense from securing the peace to offense for destroying our enemies.

I'm sure there's *some* jealousy involved, on the part of some people--I mean, look at how many people hate Oprah :-) But that said, our foreign policy is a far greater contribution to that hatred. If almost everything we did in the foreign arena was helpful, like our assistance after the tsunami, then far fewer people would hate us. But when we mock other countries for disagreeing with us and invade other countries against the advice of allies, how can we expect respect?

Both, definitely. I don't notice any countries "hating" us enough to return our aid. Guess they don't hate us all that much, do they?

I think foreign policy is more of a scapegoat. We make a big impact world-wide because we *are* successful. Have people been hurt along the way? Well, yes - but look at how stupid a lot of our domestic policy has been throughout history. Islamic countries don't have a lot of interest in letting their people know that it's *their* government that is keeping them poor and illiterate, so they just blame America for *everything*.

We *have* helped quite a few people in this world, and still do. I think a little gratitude would be in order, frankly.

Sorry, Chi...I just don't see this one like you do.

We as a nation cannot make a decision without hurting people. No matter the decision sometimes it boils down to deciding which way the least people will die. Unfortunate but true.

If we were not so dependent on oil our choices would be far different. Though we are. Keeping America strong and Americans safe sometimes depends on making unpopular decisions and actually allying ourselves so to speak with oppressors.

We are strong, we
are basically safe,
but our integrity is below grade and the result is terrorism. It is our lack of integrity that emboldens the terrorists knowing that Americans no longer have the resolve to follow through with such endeavours as ridding the world of terrorist supporting governments.

Another 9/11 is on the horizon and they know we will bicker as to how to deal with them.

Israel has lived with it for decades and to them we are nothing more than another Israel just bigger.

Yes you are right. When the US was fighting the surging demon of communism , it was on the right course and was loved by all and sundry in Arab world. But now it has adopted a wrong path of destroying not only the innocent people across the world but also its own soldiers in Iraq, just for the sake of saving a few thousand robber barons of America , who are infact the biggest enemies of the US!

That depends on which country or culture. Some hate us because of cognitive dissonance (I'll explain that one in a bit). Some Palestinian states hate us because we believe that Israel has a right to exist (foreign policy). Others believe that we are arrogant and that we look down on them, so they resent us for looking at them in pity or contempt.

One thing that all humans want to feel is respect, and you can't feel respected if you think that someone is insulting you or arrogantly looking down on you.

Americans may not be as humble as they should be, but we are not all arrogant, and we definitely do not look down on in contempt at other countries. We look in contempt at foolish, evil terrorists that want to harm us, our familiy, and our freedom, but we do not look at race or country with contempt.

You may be wondering, "what is cognitive dissonance?" Thomas Friedman gives an excellent example of how dissonance can cause hatred:

"How can that be? these young Arabs and Muslims must ask themselves. If We have the superior faith, and if our faith is all encompassing of religion, politics, and economics, why are others living so much better?
This is a source of real cognitive dissonance for many Arab-Muslim youth -- the sort of dissonance, and loss of self-esteem, that sparks rage, andl eads some of them to join violent groups and lash out at the world."

So, yes, jealousy could play a part in this, but I feel that it might be less of a "I want what that guy/country wants." I think that they might be saying this in their minds: "My belief system is supposed to be better than theirs. I feel slighted, disrespected, insulted, and angered at the fact that they are making my religion and politics look like they are worth less than theirs."

"Contempt" defined:

*lack of respect accompanied by a feeling of intense dislike; "he was held in contempt"; "the despite in which outsiders were held is legendary"

*a manner that is generally disrespectful and contemptuous

*open disrespect for a person or thing

*a willful disobedience to or disrespect for the authority of a court or legislative body

Our foreign policy is oppressive and deadly to people in the so called 3rd world.

Jealousy, we just simply live the best lives in the world and people are jealous of what they can't have. I mean we have people float across the ocean on a piece of driftwood to get here.

I actually think it has a quite a bit to do with jealousy. Our foriegn policies are the major reason however.

its not jealousy, it goes way back. people from other countries are kicked out of their own, so they go to a new place and take it over. they take away the natives way of life and establish their own. now their in competition with their former countries, and will do anything to win. if the people from Europe would have stayed there, we wouldnt have these problems.
